Washing machine faults: what you can check yourself
Why won’t my washing machine start?
First check the plug, the fuse and the residual current breaker. Is the child lock on, or is the door not properly shut? Close the door again until it clicks. Then unplug the machine for a minute and try again. If the display stays dark or the machine doesn’t respond to the buttons, the door lock or the electronics are usually at fault.
Why won’t my washing machine door open?
After a programme the door stays locked for a few minutes until the temperature drops. If there is still water in the drum, it stays shut: the machine isn’t draining, and the pump filter is then usually blocked. Never force the door. If it stays locked while the drum is empty, the door lock is faulty.
Why does my washing machine smell musty?
Washing mostly at low temperatures leaves grease and detergent residue in the tub, the hoses and the door seal. Run an empty wash at 60 degrees or higher once a month, leave the door and the drawer open after washing, and clean the pump filter. More tips on our page washing machine cleaning.
Why isn’t my washing machine heating the water?

My washing machine is in the attic and vibrates badly: what can I do?
A wooden attic floor flexes, so the machine walks and shakes more easily. Place it as close as possible to a load-bearing wall, check with a spirit level that it is straight and lock the feet. If it also vibrates on a solid floor, or you hear a metallic rumble while it spins, the shock absorbers or the bearings are worn.
My washing machine is leaking: what do I do until the technician arrives?
Turn off the tap and unplug the machine. Leave any water that is still in it, so the technician can see more easily where the leak is. Put a towel under the machine and don’t use it until it has been checked.
Do I have to get the machine out of the cellar?
No. The technician repairs it on site. Just make sure there is light, a reachable socket and about a metre of space in front of the machine so he can pull it forward.
