AEG washing machines report their faults with a code starting with an E, sometimes a C or an F. That code says which component the machine can no longer see working. Some codes point to something you fix in five minutes, like a blocked filter or a kinked hose. Others point to the motor, the control board or the heating element, and those need tools and know-how.

Where the last column says No, it involves parts carrying mains voltage or electronics. Taking those on yourself is dangerous and often makes the damage worse. Better to book a technician.
The most common AEG error codes explained
What does error code E10 mean on an AEG washing machine?
E10, and the variants C1 and F1, means the machine is getting too little water. In most cases the machine is not at fault. Check that the tap is fully open, that the inlet hose is not kinked or squashed behind the appliance, and that the mesh filter in the hose connection is not clogged. You can unscrew and rinse that filter. If the code keeps coming back, the inlet valve is faulty and a technician replaces it.
What does error code E20 mean on an AEG washing machine?
E20, E21 and E22 mean the water is not getting away. Start with the lint filter, behind the flap at the bottom of the appliance. Put a flat tray underneath, because more water comes out than you expect. Coins, buttons and hairpins are the classic cause. Then check that the drain hose is not kinked and no higher than 100 cm. If the filter is clean and the code stays, the blockage is in the pump itself.
What does error code E40 mean on an AEG washing machine?
E40, E41 and E42 are about the door. The machine cannot lock it or cannot release it. First check that no clothing is caught between the door and the seal, and that the drum is not overloaded. Close the door again until it clicks. If the code stays, the door lock is faulty. That is a standard part and a short repair.
What does error code E50 mean on an AEG washing machine?
The E50 to E52 series, along with E59, E5E, C9 and F9, points to the motor or the tachometer. The drum no longer turns, or not at the right speed. With E53, E54 and E56 it is specifically worn carbon brushes. This is not a DIY repair: the machine has to come apart and there is mains voltage involved. Good news on the brushes though, because that is a common part.
What does error code E60 or E70 mean on an AEG washing machine?
These codes, together with E61, E62, E66, E68, E69 and E71, are about heating. The water does not get hot, or not fast enough. The cause is almost always the heating element giving way to limescale, or the temperature sensor. You notice it without a code too: the door glass stays cold during a 60 degree programme and the laundry smells musty.
What does error code EF0 mean on an AEG washing machine?
EF0 and EF3 come from a blocked filter, too much foam or an unbalanced drum. This is one of the more rewarding codes, because you usually fix it yourself. Clean the drain filter, use less detergent and run an empty programme at 60 degrees to flush the residue. Then spread the laundry evenly for the next cycle.
What does EH0 mean on an AEG washing machine?
EH0 to EH3 are not a mechanical fault but a power supply problem. Unplug the machine for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Also check the socket itself and the fuse. If the code returns, the voltage at your home may not be stable.
What do Err, dEn and CLE mean on an AEG washing machine?
None of the three is a fault. Err appears on an invalid entry or when you start before the door was properly closed. dEn means the machine is in demo mode, usually activated by accident by pressing several buttons at once. CLE is a reminder that it is time to clean the drum. Calling out a technician for that costs 69 euros for a press of a button. Which is why they are listed here.
AEG washing machine problems without an error code
My AEG washing machine will not start or has no power
First test the socket with another appliance. Is the plug pushed in properly? Is the child lock on, recognisable by a padlock on the display? And is the door really fully closed? In those four cases nothing is broken.
My AEG washing machine is noisy or vibrates when spinning
On a newly installed appliance the transport bolts at the back have often not been removed. If the machine has been there a while, check that it is level and that the laundry has not bunched to one side. If the thudding stays, it is the bearings, the shock absorbers, or a foreign object between drum and tub.
Water is leaking from the door of my AEG washing machine
Usually something is caught in the door seal, or there is soap and dirt build-up. Gently pull open the fold of the rubber and wipe it out. If you see a tear or a hole, the seal needs replacing.
The door of my AEG washing machine will not open
Wait two to three minutes after the programme, as the lock only releases after a cooling period. If it stays shut, there is still water in the tub. Drain it through the small hose next to the filter and the door usually opens by itself.
There are white streaks or residue on my laundry
Almost always too much detergent, or powder that does not dissolve in cold water. Reduce the dose and wash at 60 degrees now and then. An overloaded drum rinses poorly too.
My AEG washing machine smells musty
Washing only cold leaves mould and bacteria in the door seal, the detergent drawer and the filter. Run an empty cycle at 90 degrees with a machine cleaner, and leave the door ajar between washes.
How do you reset an AEG washing machine?
A reset does not fix a mechanical fault, but it does clear an error code left hanging after a one-off glitch. So it is always the first step before you call a technician.
Turn the programme dial to stop or off. Unplug the machine and wait two full minutes, not twenty seconds. Plug it back in, run a short programme and see whether the code returns.
If the same code comes straight back, something really is broken and further resetting is pointless. If the code stays away, it was a one-off. Do note which code was showing, because if it returns within a few weeks that is valuable information for the technician.
