Why does my washing machine no longer spin?
A washing machine that will not spin leaves you with soaking wet laundry. The cause is often a blocked lint filter, which you can unscrew and clean yourself. If the problem persists, it is usually worn motor brushes or a faulty speed sensor. That needs a technician.
Why is water left standing in my washing machine?
If the machine no longer pumps out, something is usually stuck in the drain pump, or the drain hose is kinked or blocked. Coins, buttons and hairpins are the classic culprits. This can often be fixed without any new parts.
Why does the water in my washing machine no longer heat up?
Does the door glass stay cold during a 60 degree programme? The heating element is probably faulty, usually because of limescale. The laundry then comes out stained and smelling musty. A technician replaces the element.
Why does my washing machine make a loud banging noise when spinning?
Banging and thudding at high speeds points to worn bearings or shock absorbers that no longer absorb the vibration. Do not keep washing with it: a worn bearing can damage the drum shaft, and then the repair becomes considerably more expensive.
Why is my washing machine leaking?
A leak can come from the door seal, the detergent drawer, the inlet hose or an internal hose. Turn off the water supply and call us the same day. Water damage to a floor quickly costs more than the repair itself.
My washing machine will not start. What now?
First check that the door is fully closed and that the plug and fuse are working. If the display stays dead, it is usually the door lock or the control board. If the programme runs but the drum does not turn, the drive belt or the motor is the problem.
Why will the door of my washing machine not open?
After a programme the door stays locked for about two minutes. If it is still stuck after that, there is water left in the tub or the door lock is faulty. First drain the water manually through the small hose next to the filter.
Why does my washing machine smell bad?
Washing only at low temperatures leaves a greasy film and bacteria in the drum and the drain system. Run an empty programme at 90 degrees once a month and clean the door seal and the detergent drawer. If the smell stays, there may be a blockage in the drain.
Can the door of a washing machine be reversed?
No. On virtually all washing machines the door cannot be rehung: the locking mechanism sits on the left in the front panel and contains electrical components. On a tumble dryer it usually can be reversed.
Error codes on your washing machine display
An error code tells you which component the machine can no longer see working. Below are the codes we come across most often. Pass the code on when you book and the technician will bring the right part.
Miele washing machine error codes
| F10 | The water supply is blocked or insufficient. Check that the tap is fully open and the hose is not kinked. Clean the filter in the plastic block on the supply hose. |
| F11 | The water is not draining properly. Check that the drain hose is no higher than 1 m and not kinked, then clean the lint filter at the bottom left. |
| F20 | Heating fault. The set temperature was not reached in time. Unplug for 2 minutes and restart. If the code returns, the heating element or temperature sensor needs replacing. |
| F50 | Fault in the drum drive motor. You cannot resolve this yourself. The motor or the control board needs to be checked. |
| F138 | The Waterproof system has activated: water has been detected in the drip tray. Turn off the tap immediately, unplug the machine and call us. |
Bosch and Siemens washing machine error codes
Bosch and Siemens use the same electronics, so the same codes.
| E17 | The water supply is too slow. Tap fully open, hose not kinked, and clean the fine mesh filter in the Aquastop connection. |
| E18 | The filter is blocked or the drain is obstructed. Open the filter flap at the bottom, catch the water and clean the filter and the pump. |
| E16 or F16 | The door is not properly closed. Check that no clothing is caught in the seal. If the lock is faulty, it needs replacing. |
| E23 | Leak. The base tray protection has detected water. Shut off the tap immediately and check the door seal. |
| E32 | Not a fault. The load is unevenly distributed and the spin cycle was interrupted. Redistribute the laundry and run the programme again. |
AEG washing machine error codes
| E10, C1 or F1 | The machine is not getting enough water. Tap fully open and clean the mesh filter in the inlet hose. |
| E20 to E22 | Drainage fault. Clean the lint filter behind the flap at the bottom. Check that the drain hose is not kinked and no higher than 100 cm. |
| E40 to E42 | Door problem. The door does not close properly or the locking mechanism is faulty. |
| E50 to E52 | Motor or tachometer fault. The drum no longer turns correctly. |
| EF0 or EF3 | Blocked filter, too much foam from detergent overdose, or an unbalanced drum. Clean the drain filter and use less detergent. |
Samsung washing machine error codes
| 4E or 4C | Water supply problem. Tap open, hose not kinked, and clean the filter on the inlet hose. |
| 5E or 5C | The water is not draining properly. Clean the lint filter at the bottom right and check the drain hose. |
| UE | Unbalanced load in the drum. Redistribute the laundry and restart the spin cycle. If the code keeps returning, the shock absorber or drum bearing may be worn. |
Which washing machine parts fail most often?
Replacing the door seal
The door seal, the rubber between the door and the tub, tears after years or goes mouldy from washing at low temperatures. It is one of the most common repairs and also one of the simplest. A torn door seal causes a leak that looks as if the machine is running out along the bottom.
Replacing the drum bearings
Worn bearings first produce a humming or rolling noise during the spin cycle, later a loud thudding. This is a heavy repair that requires opening the tub. On older appliances this is the point where repair versus replace becomes a real question.
Replacing the drive belt
Is the drum no longer turning while you can hear the motor running? The belt has snapped or slipped off the pulley. One of the cheapest repairs there is.
Replacing the drain pump or the heating element
The pump gets blocked or the rotor jams. The heating element gives way to limescale. Both are standard parts that the technician carries in the van for the common brands.

Repair your washing machine or buy a new one?
A practical rule of thumb: if your appliance is less than eight years old, repairing is almost always the better choice. A new washing machine of comparable quality costs between €500 and €900. With us you pay a maximum of €179 in labour plus the part.
Repairing makes sense when the machine is under eight years old, when it involves a pump, belt, heating element or door seal, or when you have a solid appliance from a brand whose parts remain available.
Replacing becomes more attractive when the drum bearings have gone on an appliance of ten years or older, when the control board and the motor fail together, or when parts for the model are no longer made.

Yes. Someone aged 18 or over must be present to let the technician in, explain the problem and approve the repair. The technician goes through what he has found with you before starting.
Make the washing machine accessible and leave room to pull the appliance forward. Take the laundry out of the drum. If there is still water in it, that is not a problem. If you have the model number and the error code to hand, the diagnosis will be quicker.
Yes. A built-in appliance takes a little more time because it has to come out of the unit first, but that does not change the price. Please say when booking that it is a built-in appliance.
