Some of the codes point to something you fix yourself in five minutes, such as a blocked lint filter or a kinked hose. Others point to the motor, the control board or the heating element, and those need tools and knowledge.

What does error code F20 mean on a Miele washing machine?
F20 is a heating fault. The thermostop has been triggered because the set temperature was not reached in time. Try a reset first: unplug, wait 2 minutes, plug back in and restart the programme. If the code stays, the heating element or the temperature sensor has to be replaced. You notice the same thing without a code: the door glass stays cold during a 60 degree programme and the laundry smells musty.
What does error code F11 mean on a Miele washing machine?
F11 means the water is not draining properly. First check that the drain hose does not hang higher than 1 m and is not kinked. Then clean the lint filter at the bottom left behind the flap: switch the machine off, put a flat tray underneath, unscrew the filter, remove coins and buttons, and put the filter back. If the problem stays after those two steps, the drain pump is probably faulty.
What does error code F10 mean on a Miele washing machine?
F10 means the water supply is blocked or insufficient. Is the tap fully open? Is the inlet hose not kinked behind the appliance? And is the filter in the plastic block on the inlet hose not clogged? You can unscrew and clean that filter yourself. In most cases the machine itself is not at fault.
What does error code F138 mean on a Miele washing machine?
F138 means the Miele Waterproof system has been triggered. Water has been detected in the drip tray. Close the water supply tap immediately and unplug the appliance. Do not try to solve this yourself: there is water inside an appliance under mains voltage, and the leak has to be found first.
What does error code F50 mean on a Miele washing machine?
F50 points to a fault in the drum drive, the motor. The drum no longer turns, or no longer at the right speed. This is not a DIY repair either. A technician has to diagnose the motor or the control board, because both give the same message.
Why is a red light flashing on my Miele washing machine?
A flashing red light, often at Water Intake or Water Drainage, points to a blockage. Check that the tap is open and the hose is not kinked, and clean the lint filter at the bottom of the appliance. In many cases the light goes out as soon as the blockage is cleared.
How long does a Miele washing machine last?

My Miele washing machine will not start or has no power
Test the socket with another appliance first. Is the plug seated properly? Is the child lock on, recognisable by a small padlock on the display? And is the door really fully closed? In those four cases nothing is broken.
My Miele washing machine is noisy or vibrates during the spin cycle
On a newly installed machine the transport bolts at the back have often not been removed yet. If the machine has been in place for a while, check that it is level and that the laundry is not bunched up on one side. If the banging continues, it is the bearings or the shock absorbers, or a foreign object between drum and tub.
Water is leaking from the door of my Miele washing machine
Usually something is stuck in the door seal, or there is detergent and dirt build-up. Gently pull the fold of the seal open and wipe it out. If you see a tear or a hole, the seal has to be replaced. If water is running onto the floor under the appliance, check whether F138 appears on the display.
The door of my Miele washing machine will not open
Wait two to three minutes after the programme, because the lock only releases after a cooling period. If it stays shut, there is still water in the tub. Let it drain through the small hose next to the lint filter, and the door usually opens by itself.
My Miele washing machine no longer spins
Check first that the laundry is spread evenly, because with a bundle on one side the machine skips the spin cycle. If there is still water in the tub, it is a drainage problem and you usually see F11. If the drum no longer turns at all, that points to the motor and F50 often appears.
My Miele washing machine smells musty
If you always wash cold, mould and bacteria build up in the door seal, the detergent drawer and the lint filter. Run an empty wash at 90 degrees with a machine cleaner, and leave the door ajar between washes.
How do you reset a Miele washing machine?
A reset does not fix a mechanical fault, but it does clear an error code left hanging after a one-off glitch. So it is always the first step before you call a technician.
Switch the machine off with the on-off button. Pull the plug out of the socket and wait 2 to 5 minutes, not twenty seconds. Plug it back in and start a programme. See whether the code comes back.
If the same code returns immediately, something really is broken and resetting again is pointless. If the code stays away, it was a one-off glitch. Do note which code was showing, because if it returns within a few weeks that is valuable information for the technician.
