Washing machine broken in Leuven: what can you check yourself?

Why won’t the water drain from my washing machine?
Usually the pump filter is full: coins, buttons, hairpins or lint. Put a shallow tray and a towel ready, let the water run out through the small emergency drain hose, then unscrew the filter to clean it. Also check that the drain hose behind the machine isn’t kinked. If the machine still won’t drain, or you can’t hear the pump running, the pump needs to be checked.
Why is there water under my washing machine?
First look where the water comes from. At the front, the pump filter sometimes isn’t screwed in properly, or the door seal is torn. If the detergent drawer overflows, you are using too much detergent. If the water comes from the back or from underneath, the inlet hose, the drain hose or the pump is leaking. Turn off the tap and don’t use the machine until it has been checked.
Why does my wash programme take much longer than usual?
A programme that runs for hours usually means the machine is waiting. If the water comes in too slowly, the filter in the inlet hose is blocked by limescale or dirt. If the water heats up too slowly, the heating element is scaled up or faulty. A machine that keeps trying to spin is unbalanced or has a motor problem.
My washing machine shows an error code: what now?

A washing machine in a flat, studio or old town house

My washing machine is leaking in a flat. What do I do first?
Turn off the tap straight away and unplug the machine, so no water runs through to the neighbours below. Mop up, and leave the water that is still in the machine, so the technician can see more easily where the leak is. Let the neighbours below know as well, so they can check for damage.
I rent my flat. Who pays for the repair?
That depends on your rental agreement. If the washing machine belongs to the landlord, ask them first who arranges the repair. If the machine is yours, simply book it yourself.
Do you also repair an old washing machine in a historic house?
Yes. We also repair appliances that are ten years old or more. In an old house the machine is sometimes in a cramped cellar or storeroom. Make sure there is light, a reachable socket and some space in front of the machine so the technician can pull it forward.
