Why does my tumble dryer no longer dry?
This is by far the most reported complaint, and the cause is almost always in the air path. Start with the lint filters in the door, then check the plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger, and finally the heat exchanger itself. If you clean a filter, let it dry completely before putting it back. Refitting a wet filter causes the same fault again straight away. On a heat pump model the compressor can also be faulty, and that is the heaviest repair on this appliance.
Why does my tumble dryer no longer turn?
If the drum stays still after you press start, first check that the door is properly closed and that no delayed start is set. In that case nothing is broken. If the drum really will not turn, the drive belt is broken or has slipped off the pulley, or the motor is at fault.
Why does the drying programme take so long?
A programme that keeps running is a question of air or of moisture. The room is too warm, the lint filter or the plinth filter is blocked, the air intake grille is obstructed, the load is unevenly spread or too large, or the laundry went into the drum still soaking wet. Metal zips play a part too, because they disturb the residual moisture measurement.
Why is my laundry not dry after the programme?
Usually because the load contained different types of textile. Thick towels and thin T-shirts do not dry at the same speed, and the appliance works to the average residual moisture of the whole load. Sort by fabric type and you see the difference immediately.
My tumble dryer will not start. What now?
Check that the appliance is actually switched on, that the door is fully closed, and that the plug and the fuse are in order. If the display stays dark after that, a technician is needed.
Why does my tumble dryer stop after a few minutes?
Almost always because the laundry is not wet enough or because the load is too small. The appliance measures a low residual moisture straight away and considers the programme finished. So this is not a fault.
Why does my tumble dryer make noise?
Clicking is normal, that is the residual moisture control taking a reading. A scraping or squeaking sound comes from the rollers the drum rests on, and that is normal too. If the sound gets louder or metallic, there is wear on the drum bearing and it is best to have the appliance checked. Humming on a heat pump model is simply the compressor.
Why is water leaking from my tumble dryer?
Almost always the drain. The drain hose is not correctly connected to the trap, or the non-return valve is missing, wrongly fitted or dirty. If your dryer shares a drain with another appliance, the same problem shows up there too. If water appears just after cleaning the heat exchanger, the condenser unit has not been closed properly. That is the most common mistake after a service.
Why does my tumble dryer smell musty?
Usually because wet textile was left in the appliance too long, or because too little detergent was used during washing. Take the laundry out as soon as the programme ends and leave the door open for a while.
Messages and error codes on your tumble dryer display
A message on the display tells you which component the appliance no longer sees working. Pass the code on when you book and the technician will bring the right part.
Miele tumble dryer error codes
| F55 | The laundry is still not dry after the maximum drying time of 180 minutes. Check the lint filters and the plinth filter, reduce the load and sort by fabric type. If the code keeps returning, the heat exchanger or the moisture sensing is at fault. |
| F66 | The plinth filter is dirty. Clean it, let it dry completely and only then put it back. Refitting a wet filter gives the same message again immediately. |

| Filter door clean | The lint filters in the door are full. This is the first check for any drying problem and it takes you a minute. |
| Air Ducts Clean | The plinth filter and the heat exchanger behind it need cleaning. Let everything dry completely before refitting. |
| Empty Reservoir | The condensate reservoir is full. If the message stays with an empty reservoir, the level sensing is faulty. |

Which tumble dryer parts fail most often?
The lint filters and the plinth filter
These are not faults, but they are the cause of most complaints. The lint filters in the door and the plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger slowly fill up. The appliance then dries more and more slowly, and at some point not at all. Clean them regularly and only refit them once they are bone dry.
The heat exchanger
Behind the plinth filter sits the heat exchanger. If it clogs up with lint, the warm air can no longer get through. A technician cleans it thoroughly and checks the rest of the air path at the same time.
Replacing the drive belt
Do you hear the motor running while the drum stands still? Then the belt is broken or has slipped off the pulley. Replacing a tumble dryer drive belt is one of the cheapest repairs there is, and the technician does it in your home.
The rollers and the drum bearing
The drum rests on rollers. They naturally make a slight scraping sound. As they wear, that sound becomes louder and metallic. Do not keep using the appliance like that, or the drum itself will be damaged.
The compressor of a heat pump dryer
A heat pump model dries using a compressor. If that gives up, it is the heaviest repair on this appliance and repairing versus replacing becomes a genuine question. The technician will tell you honestly whether it is still worth it.

Repair your tumble dryer or buy a new one?
A rule of thumb from practice: if your dryer is less than eight years old, repairing is almost always the better choice. A new heat pump dryer of comparable quality costs €500 to €900. With us you pay at most €179 in labour plus the part.
Repairing makes sense when the appliance is under eight years old, when it is a drive belt, a clogged heat exchanger, rollers or a sensor, or when you have a solid appliance from a brand whose parts stay available.
Replacing becomes more attractive when the compressor of a heat pump model fails on an appliance of ten years or older, when the electronic module and the motor go together, or when parts for the model are no longer made.
