Common fridge problems
Why is my fridge not cooling any more while the light is still on?
The interior light only tells you there is power. It says nothing about the cooling. First check that the thermostat dial has not been turned down to zero and that the door actually closes. If the appliance stays warm, the cause is usually a faulty thermostat, a temperature sensor giving wrong readings, or an internal fan that no longer circulates the cold air. We repair all three at your home.
Why does my fridge freeze everything or cool too much?
Frozen milk and glassy vegetables almost always point to a thermostat or a sensor measuring the temperature incorrectly. The appliance keeps cooling because it believes it is still too warm. On fan-cooled models a blocked air damper can also be the cause. This is a common and usually quick repair.
Why is there water inside or under my fridge?
Water at the bottom of the fridge, just under the vegetable drawers, nearly always comes from a blocked drain hole at the back. That hole carries away the defrost water from the rear wall. A puddle on the floor points instead to an overflowing drip tray above the motor, a crack in the drain hose, or a water connection problem on an American fridge with an ice dispenser.
Why does my fridge make a loud ticking or humming noise?
A soft gurgling or humming is normal, that is the refrigerant circulating and the compressor running. If you hear hard ticking, rattling or an abnormally loud drone, the internal fan is usually catching on ice, or the compressor is worn. Do not simply switch the appliance off, have it checked: in most cases it is the fan and not the compressor.
Why does thick ice form in my fridge?
On a standard fridge the door is then no longer airtight. A worn or deformed door seal lets warm, moist air in continuously, and that settles as ice. If a No Frost or Low Frost appliance ices up completely anyway, the automatic defrost system is at fault, usually the defrost heater or its sensor. A technician measures that on site.
Why does my fridge door no longer close properly?
A door that springs open or sticks is caused by a stretched seal, sagging hinges or an appliance that is not level. A simple test: trap a sheet of paper between the door and the cabinet. If it slides out without resistance, the seal no longer closes. Door seals, hinges and handles we replace at your home.
Why does the temperature in my fridge fluctuate?
Fluctuating temperatures point to a sensor reading erratically, a fan stopping intermittently, or a blocked air duct between the fridge and freezer compartments. A fridge that is packed too full or stands too close to the wall cannot get rid of its heat. Leave at least five centimetres at the back and on top.
Why is the side wall of my fridge hot?
That is normal. On many modern appliances the condenser is built into the side wall and releases the heat drawn out of the fridge there. A warm side is therefore not a fault. If the appliance becomes unusually hot and cools poorly, it is probably standing too tight or the condenser fan has stopped.
Can the refrigerant gas in a fridge be topped up?
Many people search for topping up fridge gas, and for what it costs. It is a logical question, and the honest answer is a technical one.
A cooling circuit is a closed system. Under normal conditions no refrigerant leaves it, any more than petrol evaporates from a sealed tank. So if an appliance stops cooling because the gas is gone, there is a leak. Topping up without sealing that leak solves nothing: a few weeks or months later you are back where you started, facing the same bill.
Why a leak in the cooling circuit is rarely repaired
There are three practical reasons why almost every domestic appliance repair service stays away from the closed cooling circuit, and we do too.
The leak is often unreachable. On many appliances the pipework runs through the rear wall, fully embedded in the polyurethane foam of the insulation. Nobody gets to it without breaking open the casing.
The work is expensive. Tracing an accessible leak, brazing it, evacuating the system and recharging it is complex work. The cost almost always exceeds the residual value of the fridge.
There is no certainty. Even after a successful repair, the chance of a new leak elsewhere in the circuit stays high. We would rather charge nothing than charge a lot for a temporary fix.
What does the technician establish during the diagnosis?
From the outside there is no telling whether a cooling problem sits in the cooling circuit or somewhere else. In practice the cause is far more often something ordinary: the thermostat, a temperature sensor, the internal fan, the door seal or the defrost heater. All of those we simply repair at your home.
If the diagnosis shows the appliance cannot be repaired because of a leak or a failed compressor, we are straight with you and stop immediately. In that case we charge only the €69 diagnosis. You have a clear, reasoned answer and you pay nothing for work that would not bring a lasting solution.
Which fridge parts fail most often?
Replacing the door seal
The seal hardens and deforms over the years, and then the door no longer closes airtight. The result: ice, a compressor running almost continuously and higher consumption. It is one of the most common fridge repairs and at the same time one of the simplest.
Replacing the thermostat or the temperature sensor
If the appliance measures the temperature wrongly, it cools too much or too little. This is the cause behind both a fridge that freezes everything and a fridge that stays lukewarm. A standard part the technician carries for the common brands.
Replacing the internal fan
On fan-cooled appliances a fan distributes the cold air. If it stops, the bottom gets too warm and the top too cold. A fan catching on something is also the most common cause of a loud ticking or rattling noise.
Repairing the defrost system
A No Frost appliance defrosts itself using a heater and a sensor. If either of those fails, ice closes the air passage behind the rear wall and the cooling stops. A classic repair that is often mistaken for a fridge that looks completely dead.
Clearing the drain and checking the drip tray
A blocked drain hole or an overflowing drip tray causes water inside the appliance or on the floor. Most of the time no part is needed and clearing the drain is enough.
Hinges, shelves and drawers
We also replace sagging hinges, broken glass shelves, racks and vegetable drawers. It is not cooling, but a fridge whose door hangs crooked or whose drawers no longer stay in gets used a lot less happily.
Labour is always included in the fixed price of €179 maximum, however long the repair takes. The part itself is charged separately, and the technician tells you the price before he starts.
Repair your fridge or buy a new one?
A rule of thumb from practice: if your fridge is less than ten years old, repairing is almost always the better choice. A new fridge of comparable quality costs €450 to €900, and for an American fridge that runs higher still. With us you pay a maximum of €179 labour plus the part.
Repairing makes sense when it concerns the thermostat, a sensor, the fan, the door seal, the defrost system or the drain. Together those account for the majority of all fridge faults, and the appliance simply carries on for years.
Replacing becomes more attractive when the compressor has failed or when the refrigerant has escaped through a leak in the closed circuit. That is precisely the work nobody repairs profitably, and the residual value of the appliance does not justify it. On an appliance of fifteen years or older for which parts are no longer made, a new fridge is also the logical step.

Freezer and American fridge repair
A freezer works on the same principle as a fridge, so you book the same repair for it, at the same fixed price.
Why is my freezer no longer freezing?
If the temperature stays above minus eighteen degrees, first check that the door closes fully and that nothing is jamming between the drawers. After that the common causes are the same as on a fridge: the thermostat, the temperature sensor or the fan. On a No Frost freezer it is often the defrost heater, whose failure lets ice close off the air passage. Freezer repair is done at your home, at the same fixed price: €69 diagnosis, €179 maximum with the repair.
Why does very thick ice form in my freezer?
Thick layers of ice come from warm, moist air getting in. The door seal or the door hinge is the first suspect. On a chest freezer that is opened often, or one standing in a damp garage or cellar, a thicker layer is partly normal. Defrost the appliance completely and then watch whether the ice comes back quickly. If it does, there is a real fault.
Why is my freezer alarm going off?
The temperature alarm or the red light means the temperature has risen too far. That can be harmless, for example after a power cut or after loading a large batch of fresh food. If the alarm is still on after half a day, the appliance really is not cooling any more and a diagnosis is needed.
Do you also repair American fridges?
Yes. An American fridge, the side by side model with two tall doors and an ice and water dispenser, is repaired on the same terms. The complaints are somewhat different: alongside the classic cooling problems we often see a leaking or blocked water connection, an ice maker that no longer produces ice and a dispenser that freezes up. Mention when booking that it is a side by side appliance, with brand and model number, so the technician brings the right part.

What can you do before calling us?
Check that the plug is seated and the fuse is in order. Set the thermostat to position four or to five degrees. Pull the appliance slightly away from the wall so the heat can escape. Carefully clear the drain hole at the back with a cotton bud. If none of that helps, there is a fault and you book the diagnosis.
