Miele tumble dryer repair at home
Is your Miele showing F1, F55, F66 or another code, or has it stopped drying the way it used to? Below you can read what the code means and what you can try yourself. If that does not work, a technician comes to your home.
A Miele tumble dryer lasts a long time, but it reports faults with an F code. You can sort out some of those codes yourself, such as a dirty plinth filter (F66) or laundry that will not dry (F55). Others relate to temperature sensors, the motor or the heat pump compressor. Those need tools and know-how.
We repair Miele tumble dryers at home throughout Belgium. The diagnosis costs €69. If you decide not to go ahead with the repair, that is all you pay. If you do, the total cost is capped at €179.

Miele tumble dryer error codes
A Miele tumble dryer reports a fault with a code made up of an F and a number, or with a short message on the display. Mention the code when you book, so the technician knows which part to bring.
| Code | What is going on | DIY |
|---|---|---|
| F55 | After 180 minutes the laundry is still not dry. Usually too full, too wet or dirty filters. | Yes |
| F66 | The plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger is clogged. | Yes |
| F50 | Usually an overfilled drum, sometimes a software error. | Partly |
| F30, F252 | The door or the door contacts give a wrong signal. | Partly |
| F36 | The reed contact of the door is faulty. | No |
| F1, F2, F3, F4 | Temperature sensor of the refrigerant (F1, F2) or the process air (F3, F4). | No |
| F156, F157, F206, F207 | Temperature sensors further along the heat pump circuit. | No |
| F53, F104 | Drive motor or the voltage supplied to it. | No |
| F159 | The heat pump compressor does not start. | No |
| F158 | The appliance has overheated. | No |
| F38 to F46, F108, F242 | Electronics fault. Try a reset first. | Partly |
| F43, F99 | Wrong appliance type programmed, or the appliance is locked. | No |
| 888, ADD, CHE, Ctrl, noC | Display messages, not a fault. | Yes |
Where the last column says No, the fault is in sensors, the motor, the compressor or electronics. Working on those yourself is dangerous and often makes the damage worse. Book a technician instead.
Miele error codes explained
What does error code F1 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
A short circuit in the refrigerant temperature sensor. The control unit receives an impossible reading and stops the programme for safety. This is not something you can fix quickly and safely yourself. A technician tests the sensor and replaces it. It is usually a limited repair.
What does error code F2 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
A break in the same refrigerant temperature sensor. Where F1 points to a short circuit, with F2 the control unit no longer receives any signal at all. The sensor itself or its wiring is usually the cause.
What does error code F3 or F4 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
A fault in the process air temperature sensor, which measures the air passing through the drum. F3 is a short circuit, F4 an interrupted signal. Without a reliable reading the appliance cannot heat safely, so it stops.
What do error codes F156, F157, F206 and F207 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
These are also refrigerant temperature sensors, but further along the heat pump circuit. F156 and F157 relate to the sensor after the condenser, F206 and F207 to the sensor after the compressor, the hottest point in the circuit. The even codes indicate a short circuit, the odd ones an interrupted signal.
What does error code F30 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The door and the door contact give different signals. The control unit sees the door as closed while the contact reports something else, or the other way round, and will not start for safety. First check that the door clicks shut fully and that nothing is caught in it.
What does error code F36 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The reed contact of the door is faulty. That is the magnetic switch that detects whether the door is closed. A technician replaces it; it is a routine repair.
What does error code F252 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The door contacts near the hinge are dirty. Clean them carefully, that is usually enough. If the message comes back, the contact block is worn and needs replacing.
What does error code F50 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
Usually the drum is too full: take some laundry out and start again. F50 can also appear about a minute after opening the door. That is a software error, not a fault: switch the appliance off and straight back on. If the code stays with a normal load, a technician is needed.
What does error code F53 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The drive motor is faulty, or the electronics that control it. The drum does not turn, or turns unevenly. The technician works out on site whether it is the motor or the control. With F104 the voltage to the motor is too low, which is also a job for a technician.
What does error code F55 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The laundry is still not dry after the maximum drying time of 180 minutes. This is not a fault. There are four possible causes: the drum is overloaded, the laundry is too wet, the lint filters are dirty, or the washing machine did not spin the laundry enough. Stick to the maximum load, spin at a higher speed in the washing machine and clean the lint filters thoroughly.
What does error code F66 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger is clogged. Clean the lint filters first, then open the heat exchanger flap and pull the plinth filter out by its handle. Rinse it thoroughly under running water and let it dry completely before putting it back: a wet filter causes a new fault straight away. Also check the heat exchanger for lint.
What does error code F159 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The heat pump compressor does not start. Without the compressor the drum stays cold and the laundry does not dry. This is the heaviest repair on this list, but on a Miele built to last twenty years it is usually still worth doing.
What does error code F158 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The appliance has overheated. Miele gives no DIY step here, such as cleaning filters or ventilating, and treats it straight away as a technical fault. Stop using the dryer until it has been checked.
What do error codes F38 to F46, F108 and F242 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
These are electronics faults. Miele does not say which circuit board is involved. Try a reset first: disconnect the appliance from the power for a few minutes and then plug it back in. If the code persists, a technician needs to read out the appliance on site.
What does error code F43 or F99 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
With F43, no appliance type or the wrong type has been programmed. This almost always happens after a control board has been replaced without loading the right software. The technician reprograms the appliance; usually no part needs replacing. F99 means the appliance is locked. That is also a job for a technician.
What does the message Technical fault mean on my Miele tumble dryer?
The cause cannot be identified straight away. Switch the appliance off and on again, then clean the lint filters and the plinth filter thoroughly. If the message returns after a thorough clean, an on-site diagnosis is needed.
What does 888 mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?
Demo mode is switched on, which stops the programme from starting. It sometimes happens with showroom models. If your appliance has an on/off button: switch it off, close the door, hold down Start/Stop and switch the appliance on while still holding the button. After five seconds the button lights up steadily. Let go briefly, then hold it again for three seconds until it goes out.
What does ADD, CHE, Ctrl or noC mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?
None of these messages is a fault.
- ADD: you touched the Start/Add laundry button and may open the door to add or remove items. If you do nothing, the programme carries on by itself.
- CHE: the programme stopped because the laundry is unevenly distributed or tangled. Loosen the laundry, take some out if needed, switch the appliance off and on and start again.
- Ctrl: remote control is on and the appliance is connected through the Miele app. You can switch this off via programming function P97, option 00.
- noC: no connection with MobileStart. Either Miele@home has not been set up yet, or the wifi does not reach the dryer. With a good connection, Con appears.
Miele tumble dryer problems without an error code
Why does the drying programme on my Miele tumble dryer take so long?
Miele lists six causes: the room is too warm, the lint filters or plinth filter are blocked, the laundry is unevenly distributed or there is too much of it, the air intake grille at the bottom right is blocked, the laundry is too wet, or metal zips are disturbing the moisture reading. Ventilate the room, clean the filters, shake out the laundry and spin at a higher speed in the washing machine.
Why is my laundry not dry after the programme on my Miele tumble dryer?
Usually because the drum held different kinds of fabric. Thick towels and thin T-shirts do not dry at the same rate, and the appliance works to the average residual moisture of the whole load. Finish the damp items with the Warm air programme and sort by fabric type and thickness from now on.
Why won’t my Miele tumble dryer start?
Usually the appliance is not switched on or the door is not closed properly. Check the plug, the fuse and that the door clicks shut fully. If the drum does not turn after starting, check whether delayed start is on: the programme then only begins at the set time.
Why does my Miele tumble dryer stop after a few minutes?
Often because the laundry is not wet enough: the appliance decides drying is not needed. A very small load can cause this too; dry small amounts with the Warm air programme. If it happens with a normal wet load, disconnect the appliance from the power, wait a moment and start again.
Why is my Miele tumble dryer making noise?
It depends on the noise.
- Clicking is normal: the residual moisture control switches during the programme.
- Humming or droning on a heat pump model is the compressor. Some programmes also spray condensation water into the drum.
- Grinding or squeaking comes from the rollers the drum runs on. If that noise gets louder or metallic, they are worn and a repair is needed.
Why is water leaking from my Miele tumble dryer?
It is nearly always the drain. The drain hose is not properly connected to the siphon, or the non-return valve is missing, fitted incorrectly or dirty, so drained water flows back. If water leaks just after you cleaned the heat exchanger, the heat exchanger or its cover is not seated properly. That is the most common mistake after maintenance.
Why does my Miele tumble dryer or my laundry smell strange?
A rubber smell is normal on a new appliance and fades after a few programmes. If the laundry smells musty, wet laundry was left in the appliance too long or too little detergent was used. On a condenser dryer, cleaning the heat exchanger and the filters helps.
Why is there lint on my laundry after drying?
Lint comes mainly from wearing clothes and comes loose in the dryer. Normally the lint filter and plinth filter catch it. If there is a lot of lint on your laundry, those filters need cleaning. Static in synthetic fabrics is normal; a little fabric softener in the final rinse helps.
Why is the Empty container light on my Miele tumble dryer lit?
The condensate container is full, or the drain hose is kinked. Switch the dryer off, pull out the container, empty it and slide it back until it clicks into place. Check the drain hose for kinks. If the light stays on with an empty container, the condensate pump may be faulty.
Why is the Clean airways light on my Miele tumble dryer lit?
The lint filters or the plinth filter are clogged. Clean them as described below. To switch the light off, open and close the door while the dryer is switched on.
Why does Clean filter door keep appearing on my Miele tumble dryer?
Because the appliance does not register the door opening and closing while it is switched off. So work in this order with the dryer still on: open the door, clean the filter, close the door, press OK, and only then switch it off.
Cleaning and maintaining your Miele tumble dryer
How do I clean the lint filters of my Miele tumble dryer?
Do this after every drying programme.
- Open the door and pull the upper lint filter forwards and out.
- Remove the lint from all the filter surfaces.
- Turn the yellow knob on the lower filter until it clicks and pull that filter out as well.
- Vacuum the lint out of the space where the filters sit.
- Now and then rinse the filter surfaces under warm water and dry them carefully: wet filters cause faults themselves.
How do I clean the plinth filter of my Miele tumble dryer?
Work over a bowl, because water will come out. Open the heat exchanger flap, pull the plinth filter out by its handle and remove the handle. Rinse it thoroughly under running water, letting the stream run vertically over the front, and squeeze it out now and then. Let the filter dry completely before putting it back. If it is misshapen or caked with a white deposit, it needs replacing.
How do I clean the heat exchanger of my Miele tumble dryer?
Every time you take out the plinth filter, check the heat exchanger for lint. Remove it with a vacuum cleaner and brush, lightly and without pressing. The cooling fins are sharp: do not touch them with bare hands. Bent fins mean permanently poorer drying. Then close the heat exchanger and its cover properly, or water will leak out.
Your Miele working again, with no surprises

We are not an authorised Miele service partner and we do not pretend to be. We are an independent repair service. For you that mainly means: no waiting list of several weeks, a fixed price you know in advance, and a technician who knows Miele tumble dryers well.
We repair Miele condenser and heat pump dryers: the T1 and TCE ranges and older models such as the TKR, TDB and TDA. Miele supplies original parts for up to fifteen years after a model goes out of production, so even a dryer that is ten or fifteen years old can usually still be repaired. We work with original parts or parts of equivalent quality, and the technician tells you the price of a part before fitting it.
Is your dryer still under the manufacturer's warranty? Then we refer you to your retailer or to Miele. A repair by us could void that warranty, which is not in your interest.
Where do we repair Miele tumble dryers at home?
Our technicians work in Antwerp, the Brussels-Capital Region, East Flanders, West Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Limburg, Liège, Namur, Hainaut and Walloon Brabant.
Do your technicians have to leave from Vilvoorde every morning?
No. Our technicians live all over Belgium and set out each morning from their own municipality. The parts they need are delivered straight to their homes. That way we are on site quickly, without long journeys and often as soon as the next working day.
Not a Miele, or a different appliance?
Our tumble dryer repair page covers symptoms and prices for every brand. If another Miele appliance has broken down, such as your Miele washing machine or Miele dishwasher, have a look at our Miele repair service page. And if you have a second faulty appliance, we repair it during the same visit for an extra 80 euros.
Frequently asked questions about Miele tumble dryer repair
The diagnosis at your home costs €69. If the technician can repair the dryer, you pay €110 more, €179 in total at most, however long the work takes. Parts are charged separately and the technician tells you the price beforehand. If you decide not to repair after the diagnosis, you only pay €69.
Almost always, and with Miele even more so than with other brands. A new Miele heat pump dryer costs 900 to 1,500 euros, and the appliances are built for twenty years of use. A repair of at most €179 plus parts soon pays for itself.
Yes. Miele supplies original parts for up to fifteen years after your model goes out of production. An appliance that is ten to fifteen years old can therefore usually still be repaired, which is no longer possible with many other brands.
Both condenser and heat pump dryers: the T1 and TCE ranges and older models such as the TKR, TDB and TDA.
We work with original Miele parts or parts of equivalent quality. The technician always tells you in advance which part is needed and what it costs.
Most repairs are finished in a single visit. If a part has to be ordered, the technician comes back a second time. That visit is included in the price.
No, we are an independent repair service. We do not work on behalf of Miele and we are not an official service partner. In practice that means shorter waiting times and a fixed price you know in advance.
No. If your dryer is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, contact your retailer or Miele directly. A repair by us could void that warranty.
