Hob repair at home

Is your hob no longer switching on, is one zone not heating up or are the touch controls not responding? Below you can read what is usually wrong and what you can safely try yourself. If that doesn’t help, a technician comes to your home.

We repair hobs at home for all brands: induction, ceramic and gas. A modern hob is full of electronics, and many faults are in the power supply, the controls or an induction coil. We can replace those parts.

The diagnosis costs €69. If you decide not to go ahead with the repair, that is all you pay. If you choose the repair, the total is at most €179, parts extra.

Common hob problems

Why won’t my hob switch on?

First check the fuse box to see whether a fuse has blown. If the power supply is fine, the problem is usually in the internal power supply or the control module.

Why is one cooking zone not heating up?

On an induction hob it is usually the circuit board or the coil under that zone. On a ceramic hob the heating element itself has often burnt out.

Why are the touch controls on my hob not responding?

Moisture or dirt on the glass can block the controls. Clean the glass and dry it completely. If that doesn’t help, the control module may be faulty. Sometimes it also helps to disconnect the hob from the power completely for a while.

Why is my hob clicking or buzzing?

On an induction hob a slight hum or click is normal: it comes from the pan and from the switch that turns the zones on and off. Loud clicking or a fan that keeps running points to a problem with the cooling or the electronics.

Why does my hob switch itself off?

That is often a safety feature against overheating, or a sign of an electronic fault. If it also happens when the hob is cold, have it checked.

Hob error codes by brand

Modern hobs report a fault with a code on the display. These are codes we see often:

Bosch, Siemens and Neff

  • E codes (e.g. E0119, E0513): almost always an electronic fault in the control or power module. A reset sometimes helps.
  • F codes (e.g. F2, F4): often overheating. Let the hob cool down. If the code also appears when the hob is cold, the temperature sensor may be faulty.
  • U400: the hob is connected incorrectly, to too high a voltage. Switch off the power immediately.

AEG, Zanussi and Electrolux

  • E8 or E9: a communication problem between the touch controls and the power module, or an electronic fault.
  • L: not an error code but the child lock (Lock). The manual explains how to switch it off.

Miele

  • FE followed by a number: an electronic fault has been detected. First disconnect the appliance from the power for 1 minute.
  • An E or a horizontal dash: problems with pan detection or overheating.

Fix it yourself or call a technician?

What can I try myself if my hob isn’t working?

  1. Reset: switch off the hob’s circuit breaker in the fuse box. Wait 5 to 10 minutes and switch it back on. Many temporary electronic glitches disappear this way.
  2. Cleaning: make sure the glass and the touch controls are completely clean, grease-free and dry.
  3. Pan check (induction): use pans that are suitable for induction. If a magnet sticks to the base, the pan is suitable.

When is it better to call a technician?

  • if the hob trips the fuse or the residual current device;
  • if the error code comes straight back after a reset;
  • if the glass is cracked: moisture can reach the electronics through the crack;
  • if the flame on a gas hob doesn’t ignite properly.

If you smell gas, close the gas tap, open windows and doors and don’t use switches or naked flames. Working on a hob with a two- or three-phase connection (perilex, high-power supply) is life-threatening if you are not trained for it. Don’t take risks with electricity.

Induction or ceramic: what is the difference?

Under the black glass the two work in very different ways, and that also decides where faults occur.

  • Induction uses copper coils that create a magnetic field. That field heats the base of a pan with a magnetic bottom directly, not the glass. Induction heats up quickly, responds straight away when you change the setting, uses little energy and cools down quickly when you remove the pan. Faults are usually in the electronics or the coils.
  • Ceramic uses heating coils or halogen lamps under the glass. They heat the glass, and the glass passes the heat on to the pan. It works with any kind of pan as long as the base is flat, but heats up more slowly and stays dangerously hot for a long time after switching off. Faults are often a burnt-out element.

How can I make my hob last longer?

  • Lift pans rather than sliding them across the glass. A grain of sand under a heavy pan leaves deep scratches.
  • Remove sugary spills, such as jam or sauce, with a glass scraper as soon as the hob has cooled down. They can damage the glass permanently.
  • Don’t use scouring pads or abrasive cleaners, only a soft cloth and a mild or special hob cleaner.
  • Don’t use pans with a warped base. Food cooks unevenly and the electronics have to work harder.

Your hob working again, with no surprises

Hob in a kitchen with light wooden cabinets

We are an independent repair service, not an official service partner of any brand. For you that means: no waiting weeks, a fixed price you know in advance, and a technician who works on hobs of different brands every day.

Is the glass cracked? The technician tells you honestly whether a new glass top is worth it compared with a new hob. The glass top is often one of the most expensive parts.

Is your hob still under the manufacturer's warranty? Then we refer you to the manufacturer or the shop. A repair by us could void that warranty.

Where do we repair hobs at home?

Our technicians work in Antwerp, the Brussels-Capital Region, East Flanders, West Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Limburg, Liège, Namur, Hainaut and Walloon Brabant.

Do your technicians have to set off from Vilvoorde every morning?

No. Our technicians live all over Belgium and set off every morning from their own municipality. The parts they need are delivered straight to their homes. That way we get to you quickly, without long drives, and often as soon as the next working day.

Frequently asked questions about hob repair

The diagnosis at home costs €69. If you choose the repair, you pay at most €179 in total, however long the technician needs. Parts, such as a circuit board or a glass top, are charged separately and the technician tells you the price in advance. If you decide not to repair after the diagnosis, you only pay €69.

The crack itself can’t be glued or filled. What is possible is replacing the whole glass top. Because that is often expensive, the technician checks whether it is worth it compared with a new hob. In any case, don’t keep cooking on a cracked hob: moisture can reach the electronics through the crack and cause a short circuit.

Yes. The buzzing comes from the magnetic field interacting with the base of the pan, especially with light pans or pans made of several layers. The ticking is usually the switch turning the zones on and off to control the temperature. A fan that keeps running for a while after cooking is normal too: it cools the electronics.

Usually, yes. A hob needs a lot of power, often more than 7000 watts, so it usually can’t be plugged into an ordinary socket. It needs a separate cooking circuit with a two- or three-phase connection and a special socket, such as a perilex plug. Never connect a hob yourself if you don’t know the correct wiring: it can cause a fire or burn out the new circuit board straight away.

Yes, for example when the flame doesn’t ignite properly. If you smell gas, first close the gas tap and ventilate the room.

No. If your hob is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, contact the manufacturer or the shop where you bought it. A repair by us could void that warranty.

Often as soon as the next working day. Our technicians live all over Belgium and set off from their own municipality. When you book, you see straight away which slots are free.

We give a 3-month warranty on every repair we carry out. If the same fault comes back within that period, we return at no extra cost.
