AEG tumble dryer repair at home

Has your AEG stopped drying, does the water light stay on, or is the display showing E20, E60 or another code? Below you can read what the code means and what you can try yourself. If that does not work, a technician comes to your home.

Many faults on an AEG tumble dryer have a simple cause: a blocked lint filter, a dirty condenser or a kinked drain hose. You can fix those yourself. A faulty condensate pump, temperature sensor or heating needs tools and know-how.

We repair AEG tumble dryers at home throughout Belgium. The diagnosis costs €69. If you decide not to go ahead with the repair, that is all you pay. If you do, the total cost is capped at €179.

AEG tumble dryer error codes

An AEG tumble dryer reports a fault with a code on the display, usually starting with E or C, or a short message such as Err. Mention the code when you book, so the technician knows where to start.

CodeWhat is going onDIY
E20, C2The condensation water is not being pumped away. Often the drain hose, otherwise the condensate pump.Partly
E40, CDThe door does not close or lock properly.Partly
E50Motor or software. A reset is the only useful first step.Partly
E60The dryer does not heat. Clean the lint filter and the condenser first.Partly
E70, C8Temperature sensor fault.No
E80Programme selector or software.Partly
C6The moisture sensor misreads and the cycle runs too long.Partly
CE, CFElectronics fault.No
EH0Power supply problem.Partly
Err, dEnNot a fault: an operating error or shop demo mode.Yes

Where the last column says No, the fault is in sensors or electronics. Working on those yourself is dangerous and often makes the damage worse. Book a technician instead.

AEG error codes explained one by one

What does error code E20 or C2 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The condensation water is not being pumped away, or there is a problem with the external drain hose. Check that the hose is connected correctly, has no kink or loop and is not too long. If the code persists, the condensate pump is faulty. This code does not apply to vented dryers.

What does error code E40 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The door is not properly closed or locked. Possible causes: laundry caught between the door and the seal, a dirty or torn door seal, a dirty door lock, an overfilled drum or a faulty locking mechanism. Rearrange the laundry, clean the seal and close the door until you hear a click.

What does error code E50 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

A motor or software problem. The only useful thing you can do yourself is a reset: unplug the appliance for 30 seconds. If the code persists, a technician is needed.

What does error code E60 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The heating is not working: the drum stays cold and the laundry stays wet. Clean the lint filter and the condenser and make sure the room is well ventilated and larger than 10 to 12 m². Then run a timed programme and check whether the drum feels warm after 30 minutes. If it stays cold, the heating element or the heat pump circuit is faulty.

What does error code E70 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

A problem with the temperature sensor. Unplug the appliance for two hours so the electronics fully reset. If the code persists, stop using the dryer and call a technician.

What does error code E80 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The programme selector or the software. Check that the selector knob is not sitting between two programmes and perform a reset. This code only occurs on condenser and heat pump dryers.

What does error code C6 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The moisture sensor is not measuring correctly and the cycle runs for more than four and a half hours. A common cause is an unearthed socket, which disturbs the moisture reading. Also check that the filter and the condenser are clean.

What does error code C8 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

A temperature sensor fault. There is nothing you can do yourself: stop using the appliance and call a technician.

What does error code CD mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The door lock or locking mechanism. Close the door properly, make sure no laundry is caught and perform a reset. If the code persists, the lock is faulty.

What does error code CE or CF mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

An electronics fault. Switch the appliance off, leave it unplugged and call a technician. There is nothing you can do yourself.

What does error code EH0 mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

A power supply problem: voltage too low or too high, or an unstable mains supply. Test the socket with another appliance and never use an extension lead. If the problem persists, you need an electrician or a technician.

What does the message Err mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

This is not a fault but an operating error. It appears when you change a programme or option after the cycle has started, or when the option you chose cannot be combined with the programme. Switch the appliance off and on again and select the programme and options once more. On Iron Aid steam models, Err means the steam reservoir is empty.

What does the message dEn mean on my AEG tumble dryer?

The appliance is in shop demonstration mode. Unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

AEG tumble dryer problems without an error code

Why is my AEG tumble dryer not drying properly?

On a heat pump model long cycles are normal, and every time you open the door at least 30 minutes is added. Clean the lint filter: it can look clean and still be blocked. Also descale the two metal moisture strips inside the drum with a little vinegar. Mind the room temperature too: at 10 to 15 degrees drying takes about 30 percent longer.

Why is the water reservoir light on in my AEG tumble dryer?

The light comes on normally at the end of every cycle, and also after the first cycle with an empty tank. If it stays on after you switch the dryer off and on, or comes on early in the programme, there is water in the overflow tray. Clean the condenser and check that the drain hose is not looped.

Why won’t my AEG tumble dryer start?

Test the socket and the fuse, close the door fully and check the lock for damage. If the child lock is on, recognisable by the padlock symbol, hold the indicated button for three to five seconds. Also check that a programme has been selected and that delayed start is not active. After overheating, the appliance needs 30 to 60 minutes to cool down first.

Why is there water under my AEG tumble dryer?

Usually the condensate pump is blocked or a filter is clogged with dirt from the laundry. AEG does not recommend any DIY here and refers you straight to a technician.

Why does the fuse blow when I use my AEG tumble dryer?

Usually earth leakage or a short circuit. Never put a washing machine and a tumble dryer on the same circuit, because together they draw more than 13 amps, and never use an extension lead. Try a socket on a different circuit. If the fuse still trips, have the dryer checked.

Cleaning and maintaining your AEG tumble dryer

How do I clean the lint filter of my AEG tumble dryer?

Clean the lint filter after every cycle. The round filter symbol on the display reminds you. The procedure is the same for condenser and heat pump dryers.

  1. Open the door and pull the filter up out of its holder.
  2. Press the clip to open the filter.
  3. Remove the lint from both halves by hand or with a vacuum cleaner. Vacuum the lint off the seals as well.
  4. Hold the filter up to the light. If you cannot see through it, it is clogged with a thin layer of fabric softener or limescale. Rinse it under running water with a soft brush and let it dry completely.
  5. Close the filter and put it back in its holder.

If the filter will not come clean any more, it needs replacing.

How do I clean the plinth filter of my AEG tumble dryer?

The plinth filter sits behind the flap at the bottom front. Open the flap, take out the filter and remove the plastic handle if there is one. Clean it under running water, wipe away the lint with a damp cloth and let it dry thoroughly. You can also wash it in the washing machine at no more than 40 degrees and 600 rpm.

How often should I clean the condenser of my AEG tumble dryer?

Roughly every six months, or as soon as the condenser symbol flashes on the display. A dirty condenser is the most common cause of poor drying and of error code E60. Do not use the dryer with a condenser full of lint: it can damage the appliance and increases power consumption. Access differs slightly by model, so check your manual as well.

On a condenser dryer you take the condenser out. Open the large flap below the door, turn the lever or levers and open the small flap behind it. Pull the condenser out by its handle, rinse it upright under running water, for example with a shower head, and put it back. Close the small flap, lock the lever or levers and close the large flap.

On a heat pump dryer the heat exchanger stays inside the appliance. Take the filter out of the door, open the large and then the small flap of the condenser compartment and remove the lint from the fins, always in the direction of the fins. A damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a brush is enough; AEG also sells a special comb. Do not touch the metal with bare hands, wear gloves and work gently: bent fins mean permanently poorer drying.

How do I descale the moisture sensors of my AEG tumble dryer?

Two metal strips inside the drum measure how damp the laundry still is. On models from 2011 onwards they get coated with fabric softener residue, so the dryer stops too early or runs far too long. Wipe them clean with a cloth and a little vinegar. Also make sure the appliance is plugged into an earthed socket.

How do I ensure that my AEG tumble dryer does not run unnecessarily long?

Let the washing machine spin the laundry well before it goes into the dryer, do not overload the drum and sort by fabric type and thickness. Keep the room between 19 and 24 degrees: at 10 to 15 degrees drying takes about 30 percent longer, at 5 to 10 degrees up to half as long again. Every time you open the door during the programme, at least 30 minutes is added.

Your AEG working again, with no surprises

Repair at the customer's home. Our technician opens up the dryer on site and looks for the cause of the fault.

We are not an authorised AEG service partner and we do not pretend to be. We are an independent repair service. For you that mainly means: no waiting list of several weeks, a fixed price you know in advance, and a technician who opens up AEG tumble dryers every week.

We repair AEG condenser and heat pump dryers, from the 6000 to the 9000 series. The faults we see most often are a condensate pump that no longer clears the water, a door lock that no longer locks, a temperature sensor that fails and heating that no longer warms up. We work with original parts or parts of equivalent quality, and the technician tells you the price of a part before fitting it.

Is your dryer still under the manufacturer's warranty? Then we refer you to your retailer or to AEG. A repair by us could void that warranty, which is not in your interest.

Where do we repair AEG tumble dryers at home?

Our technicians work in Antwerp, the Brussels-Capital Region, East Flanders, West Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Limburg, Liège, Namur, Hainaut and Walloon Brabant.

Do your technicians have to leave from Vilvoorde every morning?

No. Our technicians live all over Belgium and set out each morning from their own municipality. The parts they need are delivered straight to their homes. That way we are on site quickly, without long journeys and often as soon as the next working day.

Not an AEG, or a different appliance?

Our tumble dryer repair page covers symptoms and prices for every brand. If another AEG appliance has broken down, such as your AEG washing machine or AEG dishwasher, have a look at our AEG repair service page. And if you have a second faulty appliance, we repair it during the same visit for an extra 80 euros.

Frequently asked questions about AEG tumble dryer repair

The diagnosis at your home costs €69. If the technician can repair the dryer, you pay €110 more, €179 in total at most, however long the work takes. Parts are charged separately and the technician tells you the price beforehand. If you decide not to repair after the diagnosis, you only pay €69.

Almost always. A new AEG heat pump dryer costs 700 to 1,200 euros. For an appliance under ten years old, a repair of at most €179 is then the sensible choice. If the dryer is old and an expensive part has failed, the technician will tell you honestly whether replacing it makes more sense.
